GOOD MORNING, WARWICK. Welp, it’s safe to say Sunday didn’t go as planned. Yesterday’s unofficial Super Bowl Monday “holiday” served as a bereavement day for many Patriots fans who put all their hope in a team that, quite frankly, didn’t show up. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any colder or more depressing, there’s supposedly another winter storm brewing this week. Latest reports are showing just a coating, but with our luck, we’ll probably get another surprise dumping.
The good news: highs in the 40s next week and Valentine’s Day on the horizon. If you're hunting for a valentine, football season’s kaput — expect the guys to emerge from their man-caves any second, blinking at the sunlight like confused groundhogs.
Here’s what’s goin’ on in Warwick this week:
Super Bowl Blunder
Patriots lose Super Bowl LX, 29-13 to Seahawks
This one hurts. Seattle’s defense suffocated Drake Maye all night — six sacks, three turnovers, and the Pats went scoreless through three quarters. Kenneth Walker III ran for 135 yards and earned MVP honors. The first points New England scored came after trailing 19–0 in the fourth quarter.
Maye finished with a historically rough postseason: 21 sacks across four playoff games, breaking Joe Burrow’s record. The Pats defense actually held Seattle to field goals early, but the offense gave them nothing to work with.

All those fans who lined the fences at TF Green in sub-zero temps to send the team off are now making the cold, quiet drive to work this morning. Some braved the cold again last night to welcome the Patriots back home. Hopefully Will Campbell had his headphones in — word is a few fans at the airport weren’t exactly rolling out the red carpet.
Bitter Cold
If you drove down Lake Shore Drive in Hoxsie this weekend, you probably saw DPW crews digging through frozen earth to fix a water main break. Mayor Picozzi said excavating the road has been extremely difficult, which is mayor-speak for the ground being basically concrete right now. Wind chills hit –20°F Saturday night, with frostbite possible in as little as 30 minutes. The road remains partially closed.
Meanwhile, plumbers across the state are begging you to let your faucets drip and keep your heat above 55°F — because a frozen pipe doesn’t send a calendar invite before it bursts in your basement. Even Roger Williams Park Zoo closed Sunday and pushed ‘Patriots Free Day’ to next weekend. Official reason: dangerously cold. Unofficial reason: someone must have known the pats were gonna stink up the joint.
Weekly Delinquencies
Warwick police had a busy stretch last week, dealing with everything from fake paperwork to good old-fashioned property damage.
Early on the morning of February 2, state troopers pulled over a vehicle on East Avenue and ended up arresting a 31-year-old East Providence man with multiple outstanding court warrants tied to counterfeit certificates and forgery cases originating in Warwick and Warren. What started as a routine traffic stop quickly turned into a paperwork problem of the worst kind, with the driver heading to Third District Court instead of wherever he was planning to go at 8:00AM

Then on February 4, police shifted from fraudulent documents to physical destruction, arresting a 59-year-old Warwick man on a vandalism charge. The arrest was made on a warrant, and after arraignment in Third District Court, he was released on personal recognizance. Moral of the story: fake documents and damaged property both have a way of catching up with you — usually faster than expected.
Local Senator Turned Judge
Former Rhode Island Senate Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey is officially trading the State House floor for the courtroom bench. The Senate confirmed his appointment as a District Court judge last week, marking the end of a nearly 30-year run in the legislature and the start of a very different kind of public service. Supporters say his deep knowledge of state law makes him a natural fit; critics, unsurprisingly, were less enthusiastic about the crossover. Either way, it’s a big career pivot — proof that in Rhode Island politics, there’s always another chapter, usually involving someone you just saw at Stop & Shop.
Small Business Spotlight
If you've ever chased down the Chicked Out Nuggz food truck at a brewery or festival, good news: they’re not moving anymore. The popular nugget operation just cut the ribbon on a brick-and-mortar location at 997 Sandy Lane. Hours are Thursday through Saturday 4:00PM–8:00PM, and Sunday 2:00PM–9:00PM, meaning they opened just in time for Super Bowl Sunday. Whether anyone in Warwick had an appetite after that game is a different question. Either way, they’re here now. Go get your Nuggz.
