GOOD MORNING, WARWICK. What an exciting weekend in sports. World Cup thrillers going down to extra time, the Red Sox closing out the first half of the season on a 9-game winning streak, and the Conor McGregor fight, well, yeah, that happened.

This week is more of the same in the Wack: beautiful weather, hot climate, and your typical beach traffic jams. If you see my old man this week, wish him a happy birthday. July 17th isn't just the day he was born, it also marks the day Walt Disney opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California back in 1955.

If you know my dad, just picture him at Disneyland. Waiting in line for 75 minutes to hop on Space Mountain for a total of two minutes, then soon after approaching the "Mickey Bar," only to find out from an employee dressed like Mickey Mouse that his Bud Light is going to cost him $22, before tip. And that cash isn’t accepted. "This is bullsh*t, ya know," he'd say before swiping his card. Indeed, Dad. Indeed.

Here's what's goin' ahn.

TODAY’S SNAPSHOT

⏱️ Sunset Time: 8:19 PM

🌊 First High Tide: 7:35AM

☀️ UV Index: 8.0

Chance of Rain: 10%

📅 On This Day: Today is National French Fry Day, and Warwick's got legit contenders: Chelo's curly fries (honey mustard non-negotiable), Axelrod's Fry Shack, and Iron Works' garlic parm fries are a few of my favorites. We only have a few months left of this type of weather where you can justify eating a heaping tray of fries as a post lunch snack with the fact that you'll sweat out the calories by dinner time.

WHAT’S GOIN’ AHN

🔥Captain's Resto-Bar: The Motive Comes Out

The man accused of pouring gasoline on Captain's Resto-Bar's fence has been identified and charged. Brian Fisher, 47, of Warwick, works at Safe Harbor Marina, the company that owns the land and leases it to the restaurant. Marina management says Fisher acted inappropriately toward a female employee on June 30, left work early the next day after being confronted about it, and hadn't been seen or heard from since.

Police say they later matched a palm print found on a trash bag at the scene to Fisher, and his own roommate called police to say he believed Fisher was responsible. A text Fisher allegedly sent about the restaurant's tenant dispute, referencing frustration over "certain and important rules," was also recovered by investigators. He was arrested Monday, held overnight, and arraigned Tuesday on a charge of 5th-degree arson. Police believe he acted alone. He'd previously been charged with first-degree arson back in 2009 in Newport.

🛬T.F. Green Lands National Recognition

T.F. Green Airport landed a spot among Travel + Leisure's 2026 World's Best Awards for top U.S. airports, earning praise for its small size, light crowds, and easy navigation. The recognition puts the airport on the map for travelers nationwide, and it comes as T.F. Green continues expanding its route offerings and passenger numbers year over year, positioning itself as a legitimate alternative to the bigger, more chaotic hubs in Boston and New York.

For anyone who's flown out of T.F. Green, this isn't exactly breaking news. No sprinting a 5K to your gate, no taking a commuter rail from one terminal to another, just a short walk from parking to security to your seat. Travel + Leisure readers are just now catching up to what Warwick commuters have known for years.

Sure, half the restaurants in the terminal seem to be perpetually closed and the view out the windows is mostly Post Road doing its Post Road thing, but we'll take the win anyway. And for the record, T.F. Green is located in Warwick, not Providence, despite what 99% of the country believes. Small correction, big pride.

🛣️Main Avenue Goes on a Diet

Starting Friday night, July 10, RIDOT began restriping Main Avenue between Warwick Industrial Drive and West Shore Road, cutting it down from two lanes in each direction to just one lane each way, with a center turn lane running down the middle. It's part of the larger $102.4 million Warwick Corridor Project, which also covers bridge work, paving, sidewalk upgrades, ADA improvements, and pedestrian safety features along the corridor.

This isn't the state's first crack at a Main Avenue diet either. Back in 2022, RIDOT ran a similar lane reduction further down the road between Route 5 and Jefferson Boulevard, citing 59 crashes over five years, including one fatal one, and pointing to studies showing road diets can cut crash rates by close to 40%. This new stretch is being rolled out as a trial run, and RIDOT says it'll decide by this fall whether to make it permanent.

So consider this your fair warning before your Monday commute gets a whole lot more interesting. One lane, a turn lane, and a city full of drivers who treat the center turn lane like a secret third passing lane invented just for them. RIDOT is basically running a four-month science experiment on whether Warwickians can share nicely, and early betting odds are not in our favor.

WEATHAH THIS WEEK

If you could all keep my front lawn on your prayer chain, that would be much appreciated…

QUICK HITTERS

  • 📚 Warwick Schools Lose Two More Leaders | Link | Director of elementary education Lisa Schultz is leaving to become a principal in Groton, Connecticut, after budget limits kept the district from offering more to keep her. Meanwhile, controller Yarmayn Rodriguez is heading to Boston after helping move the district off an accounting system that had reportedly been running since roughly the dial-up era. Both positions are already posted. Godspeed to whoever inherits that job listing.

  • ⚖️ Warwick Watchdog vs. City Hall | Link | Warwick officials want a federal judge to stop resident Rob Cote from sharing documents tied to his ongoing First Amendment lawsuit against the city. The ACLU calls it ironic, seeing as the whole case is about the city allegedly silencing him in the first place. Written arguments are due in August, so this one's got some legs left. Grab your popcorn, Warwick politics never disappoints.

  • 🍋 Turning Lemons Into Self-Sufficiency at 10 Years Old | Link | Fifth grader Gabriella Hebert has spent the summer running her own lemonade stand around the neighborhood, and she's not doing it just so she can buy a brand new set of Squishmallows. She's saving up to buy her own back-to-school supplies before the year even starts. Her advice to other kids looking to start their own stand: just set it up and have fun with it. I think I spent my time as a kid thinking an NBA scout was conveniently parked on my street, secretly recruiting me for an accelerated NBA development program. I should've grabbed some lemons and a pitcher. You go, Gabriella.

RETAIL

This week's Amazon package took some extra muscle to lug up the steps. We gave our driver a bit of a workout, and that's exactly the type of energy this purchase is bringing to the house every day. Consider this one a joint purchase, something we'll both actually use. Somewhere, a Facebook Marketplace seller just lost a $50 sale and doesn't even know it yet.

BRAIN FOOD

🧠 Where in Warwick

Last week humbled a lot of you. Only 46.7% guessed correctly, meaning the majority, 53.3% to be exact, had absolutely no idea what they were looking at. No shame in it, Warwick's full of spots that blend right into the background until someone points a camera at them. Think you'll redeem yourselves this week?

🧐 Where was the above photo taken? Click the location you think is correct below. No cheating! Answer revealed at the end.

📖 The Warwick Word of the Day

Amazonessia (noun) | am-uh-zahn-EE-shuh

The condition of purchasing something on Amazon, immediately forgetting it exists, and being met with genuine surprise and mild confusion when it shows up on the doorstep days later.

My wife has been diagnosed with a chronic case. So chronic, in fact, that it spawned a full newsletter feature that now breaks click-through rate records every single week. She'll order something at 11 PM in a half-asleep haze, wake up with zero memory of the transaction, and then act like Christmas morning when a box appears containing a product she cannot explain or justify. What started as me just noting her confusion has turned into one of TWWU's most-clicked sections. Turns out chronic amazonessia is good for business.

Thank you to Mark S. who submitted today’s word of the day. The guy just gets it. You can submit a word of the day yourself, here. I’ll be sure to include it in the next edition!

ONE LAST SIP

Where in Warwick Answer: This week's mystery spot was the ball field at Belmont Park, tucked along the Pawtuxet River at the northernmost tip of Warwick. Beyond the diamond, the park is home to soccer and lacrosse fields, a network of wooded walking trails that trace the riverbank, and a kayak launch that gives paddlers direct access to the Pawtuxet. It's become a bit of a hidden gem for birders and photographers too, with plenty of wildlife activity along the water's edge outside of game days.

So next time you're dropping off a kid for a Little League game there, take a lap on the trail afterward. Just watch out for the poison ivy and the occasional 16-year-old vape god making his rounds.

That's it for today. Have a story suggestion, a tip, or just want to formulate conspiracy theories about the McGregor fight? I'm here for it. Just hit reply. Thanks for reading!

Keep smiling!
