The long weekend has officially ghosted us, your inbox is bloating like a post-holiday waistline, and the city is stumbling back into weekday mode like it's forgotten how to adult. Turn off the Drake Maye highlights, wipe the snow off your car, and dive into the short work-week. But first, here’s what’s going on in Warwick.
STICKER SHOCK
🏠 Someone Dropped $3.5 Million on a Warwick House (Because Why Not?) Yep, you read that right—Warwick Neck just birthed a real estate unicorn. The waterfront pad at 110 Shawomet Ave. fetched a record-smashing $3.5 million, narrowly beating out the late Senator John Chafee's old digs by a cool $100K.
Agent Ann Davidson-Lasne claims this gem would've gone for $5-6 million in snootier spots like Barrington or Newport. So, congrats, Warwick: We're the budget-friendly oceanfront for folks who want yacht views without the yacht club snobs. "Great value," she says. Translation: All the waterfront glamour, none of the neighbors judging your grill setup. If you're house-hunting, maybe start saving those nickels (since pennies don’t exist anymore)—or just go on a major roll playing Keno at The Rally or something...

HAWK HONORING
Bishop Hendricken just hung #14 in the Pepin Gym rafters for Michael King, the San Diego Padres pitcher who absolutely crushed it in 2024.
After being traded from the Yankees to San Diego in December 2023 (in that blockbuster Juan Soto deal, no less), King transitioned from reliever to starter and proceeded to have a breakout season: 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, 201 strikeouts, and a 7th-place finish in NL Cy Young voting. He also won playoff starts against the Braves and Dodgers. Not too shabby for a kid from Rhode Island.
King was a four-year Hawk, winning state championships in 2012 and 2013 and earning Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a senior. He's now the 11th Hendricken athlete to have his jersey retired, joining fellow baseball alums like Rocco Baldelli, Thomas Pannone, and Jeff Beliveau.
"You're seeing those jerseys up there and wanting it to be you someday," King said at last week's ceremony. "Huge honor."
He also just re-signed with the Padres for three years and $75 million.
EH, WHAT’S ANOTHER $50 MILLION?

🗳️ Early Voting Resumes: Because $50M Decisions Can't Wait City Hall's doors are swinging open today, so early voting's back for Warwick’s Feb. 3 special election on that shiny $50 million school bond. (Yes, the one that's basically "Round 2: Electric Boogaloo" after the 2022 $350M approval.)
Where: Warwick City Hall (bring ID and low expectations). When: Weekdays, 8:30am–4:30pm, through Feb. 2. No excuses—it's easier than finding parking at The Edge Fitness Club on Route 2.
Quick refresher:
We greenlit $350M in 2022 for new Pilgrim and Toll Gate high schools.
But oops—construction costs skyrocketed, and Pilgrim's site turned out to be a toxic waste party (contaminated soil, anyone?). Contingency funds? Poof.
This bond's for the fun stuff: athletic fields, courts, lighting. Basically, ensuring the kids can run laps without dodging potholes.
Supporters: "It's what we promised—don't shortchange the future!" Critics: "Hold up, we're already in debt up to our eyeballs—cut costs, not more checks." Either way, it's your call in less than two weeks. Vote like your property taxes depend on it (spoiler: they do).
QUICK HITS
📊 Tough Year Ahead? RIPEC's Michael DiBiase is forecasting fiscal headwinds for Rhode Island's economy. The state is staring down a structural deficit and spending that's outpacing revenue. Translation: budget season is going to be fun.
🐾 RISPCA's New Boss Todd Cramer officially took over as president in late December, bringing 25+ years of animal welfare experience. His philosophy? Get out of his team's way and let them do their jobs. Honestly, more leaders should try this.
🔧 $40M Trades Center Coming New England Tech is building a massive skilled trades training facility on their East Greenwich campus. Groundbreaking: Spring 2026. Opening: Late 2027. Programs: plumbing, electrical, HVAC, construction — basically, the people you desperately need when your pipes burst at 2am.
🤼 Toll Gate Wrestling The Titans are looking dangerous this season. Keep an eye on them as the postseason approaches.
👵 Need Caregiver Help? Dial 2-1-1. United Way just expanded support for the 290,000 Rhode Islanders providing care for loved ones. They'll connect you with resources, respite options, and someone who actually gets it. Use this.
GOOD EATS - RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT
🍕Joe's Pizza: No Tables, No Problem
There's a new pie in town, and you can't even eat it there.
Joe's Pizza just dropped off Kilvert Street with a simple pitch: great pizza, zero small talk. It's online order only — no storefront seating, no awkward waiting-room eye contact with strangers, no fighting over the last booth. Just order from your couch, pick it up, and retreat to your home like the glorious introvert you are.
We're still scoping out the menu, but early word is the slices are legit - New Haven style pies that would make Dave Portnoy blush. Perfect for a Tuesday night when cooking feels like a personal attack.

THIS WEEKEND
🎵 RI Philharmonic: "The Blue Danube" — This Thu-Fri (Jan 23-24) at The Vets. Music Director Ruth Reinhardt leads Strauss' iconic waltz plus Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony. Fancy feelings, no ball gown required.
🎭 Gamm Theatre: "Eureka Day" — Playing through Feb 1 in Warwick. A razor-sharp comedy about a private school vaccination debate that somehow remains hilarious despite being painfully relevant. Written pre-COVID, feels like it was written yesterday. You'll laugh, you'll cringe, you'll text your school board member.
⛪ Catholic School Open Houses — This Saturday & Sunday (Jan 25-26). St. Kevin, St. Peter, St. Rose of Lima, and Bishop Hendricken are all hosting. If you're exploring options (or just want to see where Michael King became Michael King), this is your weekend.
That’s just about it! Stay warm out there — and seriously, clean off your car. See you Friday.
